  • A preconception counseling appointment is a crucial step for individuals or couples planning to conceive. During this appointment, the midwife will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of your health history, focusing on both physical and emotional well-being.

The session typically begins with an overview of your medical history, including past pregnancies, any existing health conditions, medications, and lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, and substance use. The midwife may also ask about family medical history to identify any genetic concerns.

Next, the conversation will cover the importance of a healthy lifestyle leading up to conception. This includes guidance on nutrition, prenatal vitamins (especially folic acid), and maintaining a healthy weight. The midwife will discuss the significance of managing stress and ensuring mental and emotional support.

The appointment also provides an opportunity to address any vaccinations or screening tests needed prior to pregnancy. This may include discussing conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure and how to optimize their management.

Finally, the midwife will talk about the timing of conception, fertility awareness methods, and what to expect in early pregnancy. Questions and concerns are encouraged to ensure that you feel informed and supported as you prepare for this important life transition.

  • We will be providing holistic well-woman care soon!

  • The difference between an OBGYN, a midwife, and a doula lies primarily in their training, roles, and the type of care they provide during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum.

    OBGYN (Obstetrician-Gynecologist)
An OBGYN is a medical doctor who specializes in women's reproductive health, including pregnancy and childbirth. They are trained to handle various complications that may arise during pregnancy and can perform surgical procedures, such as cesarean sections. OBGYNs typically work in hospitals and may offer a range of options for labor and delivery, including medication and interventions.

    Midwife
Midwives are trained professionals who provide care to women during pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period. Midwives emphasize personalized care and often support natural childbirth, including home births and water births. They provide guidance on prenatal care, childbirth education, and postpartum support.

    Doula
A doula is a trained support person who assists women during pregnancy and childbirth but is not a medical provider. Doulas offer emotional and physical support, information, and comfort measures during labor. They help create a positive birth experience and advocate for the mother's wishes but do not perform medical tasks or deliver the baby. Doulas can also provide support during the postpartum period by helping with infant care and maternal recovery.

In summary, OBGYNs focus on medical aspects of pregnancy and childbirth, midwives provide holistic care during labor and delivery, and doulas offer emotional and physical support without medical interventions. Choosing between these options depends on individual preferences and the desired birth experience.

  • A lot of mothers are not sure if they could ever give birth at home, but feel apprehensive about being in the big hospital system. As trained experts in natural birth, we create a safe environment in which you can connect with your power, overcome your fears, and give birth on your terms.

  • While many midwives provide essential care and support for expectant families, it's important to understand that not all practices accept insurance. This often stems from the desire to maintain a personalized and holistic approach to care that aligns with the midwifery model. By operating outside of the insurance system, midwives can focus on the needs of their clients without the constraints of insurance regulations and reimbursement policies. This can allow for more flexible payment options and an individualized care plan tailored to each family's unique circumstances. However, it is advisable for prospective clients to discuss payment structures and possible financial assistance options directly with their midwife to understand their choices fully.

We do offer flexible payment plans to work with your financial situation and discounted rates for Medicaid and military clients.

What our clients are saying

  • “We were so lucky to have Alora on our team not just prenatally for visits, but for the birth of our sweet girl! From the very beginning her kind demeanor made us think of her as a friend, not just a provider. She always answered questions with evidence based responses that included all of the options-never pressuring one way or another. Such a close and trusting relationship is essential for a relaxed birth. I was confident and comfortable with Alora every step of the way-I can’t imagine this process with another provider!”

    Megan Williams

  • "Our family loved having Alora as our midwife. It is important to me to be able to trust the one who is going to be a part of such a special and important time in our life. Alora surpassed our expectations and we couldn't have dreamed up a better midwife! Not only is she knowledgeable and able to help you through difficult decisions when it comes to your needs during pregnancy, labor, and delivery, but she is also incredibly kind and patient. She genuinely cares about you. She is very experienced and I would even say an expert at what she does. There was one point during my labor where the baby had his hand by his face and Alora was able to gently encourage him to move it in between contractions! This helped to progress the labor and also prevented tearing. Our labor and delivery was beautiful thanks to the wisdom, skill, and love of our midwife, Alora."

    Christine Jacobsen

  • "Alora assisted me in birthing my daughter in a pool at my home- 2VBAC. When I first met Alora, I went home and told my husband, “I don’t know what it is about her, but I trust her with my life.” Alora saw me throughout my prenatal visits. She got to know me and my family throughout my pregnancy. She reassured me whenever I started to doubt my capabilities. She educated me throughout the process. She made recommendations on what to read, podcasts to listen to, and birthing classes to take. When I went into labor, I was so happy to see her. She and her assistant helped set up my birthing pool. Alora guided me when I needed it, but also let me be in peace. Through different parts of my labor, she explained to me what was happening to my body and what my baby was doing. After birthing my daughter, she let me birth my placenta when I was ready, and waited to cut the umbilical cord. She is truly amazing, and would recommend her to any woman looking for a natural birthing process safely in their home."
